When babies are not feeling well, they cry because they cannot say what is wrong. To give parents peace of mind, we need a device that can quickly and accurately measure temperature and track historical data. As parents ourselves, we could not find anything on the market that could satisfy our needs. That's why we created Wishbone to help parents monitor and track temperatures more efficiently.
Wishbone is a non-contact thermometer that works with smartphones to improve the way we measure and track temperatures. It is easy to use and can accurately detect body temperature in under 2 seconds. Through its app, Wishbone can store historical data which can be viewed at a later date for analysis and reference. This feature is particularly helpful for parents monitoring their baby's recovery from illness and for couples that are trying to conceive. Wishbone’s unique Y-shape is designed for better viewing angles while operating it and it is the only smart thermometer that is compatible with both Android and iOS devices.
The first thing you will notice about Wishbone is its unique Y-shape design that is very different from other thermometers. After many design experiments and feedback from users, we felt it may be hard for users to operate a straight-pointing sensor and see the screen at the same time.
Therefore, we chose a 45 degree angle tilt for the sensor design because that is the most natural viewing angle for human eyes. This makes it much easier to operate and view the app simultaneously and in turn you'll receive more accurate feedback.
The Y-shape design also allows users to point Wishbone in the direction that is more comfortable for each situation, Users can simply rotate Wishbone to find the best way to point its sensor.
The other branch of Wishbone contains small lithium batteries that power the sensor. They ensure robust operation and make Wishbone compatible with both Android and iOS devices. This was the only way to ensure the widest compatibility as many phones have different electrical output from their phone jacks. The battery is very small, easy to replace and can be readily found in common stores. Together, the angled sensor and battery design give Wishbone its unique personality and features.
The core function of Wishbone is to detect temperature using an infrared sensor. Wishbone is noninvasive, reliable and versatile for many applications. It can accurately measure body temperature by measuring forehead skin and examine liquid temperature from surfaces in just a few seconds. While measuring, Wishbone does not emit any radiation or sound as it uses a passive sensor. Wishbone can also measure environment temperature by pointing it toward the sky or ceiling. Both Object and Ambient modes are still currently under development.
As mentioned above, Wishbone can help parents quickly and accurately measure their baby’s body temperature. It works best when the sensor end is pointing directly at the forehead and is less than 5cm away. It takes less than 2 seconds for Wishbone to acquire data and determine the body temperature. The readings can be displayed in either Celsius or Fahrenheit.
Temperature data can be even more useful when compared to past records. That’s why we added the function to create profiles for individuals to separate and track each person's data. Using historical data, parents and couples can create charts to help them understand their situations and make better decisions. For example, couples can identify ovulation periods by looking for a small but clear spike in female body temperature. This feature integrates Wishbone's hardware with the app running on a smartphone and truly makes it a smart thermometer.
Wishbone can detect the temperature of either solids or liquids. This is a very handy tool for parents to check milk's temperature or to see if bathtub water is too hot. For it to work, just enter the Object mode and point Wishbone at a target that is within 5cm of the sensor to gather and calculate temperature data. We are still developing this function as the Object mode requires a different set of sensor calibration to the Body mode.
Another exciting Wishbone feature is the Ambient mode. In this mode, Wishbone can detect environment temperature by using its sensor to gather data from the surroundings. Parents can use this feature to find out ambient temperature and decide whether they need to add more clothes to their baby. For it to work, users would need to tap on the Ambient mode and press scan. There is no need to point the sensor in any particular direction, but we usually recommend pointing Wishbone's sensor upwards. Like the Object mode, the Ambient mode requires a different set of sensor settings and is still under development.
A traditional thermometer takes at least 30 seconds to get a good measurement and that may be impossible when the baby is not feeling well and moves around. While an ear thermometer is faster than a traditional thermometer, it still requires contact and doesn't track or analyze temperature data.
Wishbone works much faster, is less prone to user error and is smaller than both traditional and infrared thermometers. It also doesn't require contact, so it won't disturb your baby's sleep or be contaminated. A major part of Wishbone's development was to significantly reduce the size of the thermometer and the circuit while maintaining excellent accuracy. Many design experiments were done to minimize the size as much as we possibly could while ensuring efficient operation.
As a father and a baby product store owner, I know the hassle of taking a child's temperature all too well and so do my teammates. My parenting experience and the feedback from my customers led me to believe that there is a need for a small, easy-to-use thermometer that measures and monitors temperatures using a smartphone. That's how we came up with the idea for Wishbone.
Using a passive infrared sensor and advanced algorithms, Wishbone can quickly and accurately measures temperatures from many different sources. The app uses highly optimized codes for processing sensory data in each detection mode to achieve both speed and accuracy. Wishbone does not emit any light or radio-electrical energy and certainly doesn't contain mercury that can cause health concerns. The Wishbone measures temperature from a short distance and it is safe and very useful in many applications, especially for parents with young children.
