What is WeWALK Movement?    
The WeWALK Movement is a fundraising project initiated by YGA with the aim to make an impact in assistive technology with WeWALK Smart Cane Incubation for the visually impaired. Alone they can do so little, together we can do so much. Donate or pre-order for yourself or a loved one. 

What is WeWALK Smart Cane?    
WeWALK smart cane is an innovative smart white cane designed for the visually impaired. It's built with Alexa and works with other third-party apps such as Google Maps, Uber, Lyft. With an open platform available to developers, endless practical skills can be developed overtime catering to specific user needs as an innovative and expandable smart cane.

Why are you crowdfunding?    
We funded WeWALK at Arikovani which is crowdfunding platform in Turkey. WeWALK raised over $94,000 within 48 hours. The campaign set a track record for Arikovani and WeWALK team is growing it's reach to more countries and expand the reach of the WeWALK movement and continuation of advancing the WeWALK smart cane to those in need. 
 

 

What WeWALK features are available?    
Obstacle detection, smartphone integration, and open platform for new skills to build on.  

What is the battery life of WeWALK?
Up to 5 hours (~ 1 day / Average daily usage is 4 hours). The micro USB input, which is at the narrow side of the device, is used to charge the battery of your WeWALK.

Where is it manufactured?    
Vestel has given its support for the project by opening the doors of Vestel City, the biggest factory in Europe. 

Does it have an app? Which phones does it work with?
WeWalk Smart Cane runs on Android and iOS-based mobile phones. Android-based devices should have the software version 5.0 or later, iOS-based devices require OS version 10 or later.

 

 

Safety and Regulation

What are the recommended ages?  
Anyone who is capable of using a white cane between the age of 15 to 60 years old but not subject exclusively to the range.   

Is it safe?
WeWALK helps visually disabled users to sense obstacles at head level, to improve safety. But improper use of a white cane by people who are incapable of using it could cause some potential hazards.

WeWALK Smart Cane

WeWALK attaches to the traditional white cane, transforming it into an innovative smart cane. This technology increases visually impaired people’s independence and promotes full participation in society via three of its features.

1. Detects Obstacles: WeWALK detects obstacles above chest level with an ultrasonic sensor and vibrates when these objects are near.

2. Paired with Phone: When paired with the WeWALK mobile application via Bluetooth, the user can use applications with WeWALK’s touchpad, without holding his or her phone. For example, the user can get navigation on the WeWALK device.

3. Evolves with Integrations: WeWALK is integrated with “Google Maps” and “Voice Assistant”. In the future, WeWALK will be integrated with transportation applications and ride share applications. These new integration features are installed through periodic software updates.

시각 장애인을 위한 혁신적인 스마트 지팡이 위워크(WeWALK)

2015년도에 수년 안에 우리 생활에서 사용될 수 있는 스마트 상품이 어떤 것이 있을지에 대한 아이디어를 논하는 자리가 있었습니다. 그 자리에서 다양한 제품이 나왔는데 그중에 하나가 시각 장애인용 지팡이였습니다. 현재 사용되고 있는 시각 장애인용 지팡이가 너무 단순해 여기에 간단한 편의 장치를 달면 훨씬 도움이 될 거란 것이 그 이유였습니다.

그래서일까요? 현재 이러한 시각 장애인용 지팡이가 인디고고를 통한 크라우드펀딩을 진행하고 있는 것을 보고 '드디어 선을 보였구나.'라고 하는 반가운 느낌이 들었습니다. 

시각 장애인을 위한 혁신적 스마트 지팡이라는 이 제품의 이름은 위워크(WeWALK)인데요, 그렇다면 이 시각 장애인용 지팡이에는 어떤 기능이 추가되어 장애인들의 눈이 되어 주고 있는지 한번 확인해 보겠습니다. 


시각 장애인용 스마트 지팡이 위워크의 기능

우선 시각 장애인들이 길을 걸을 때 가장 필요한 기능이죠. 장애물 감지 기능입니다. 위워크는 초음파 센서를 내장하고 있어 전방에 장애물이 있는 것을 알 수 있도록 해줍니다. 또한 진동과 사운드를 통해 경고를 해 줍니다.

그리고 위워크는 마이크와 스피커를 포함하고 있으며 이를 이용하여 알렉사를 이용할 수 있습니다. 지팡이 손잡이에는 터치패드가 있는데 사용자의 동작을 통해 이 터치패드를 활성화시키게 되며 또한 이 터치패드를 통해 스마트폰을 컨트롤할 수 있습니다.   

또한 시각 장애인의 안전을 위한 LED 라이트를 내장하고 있어 누구라도 쉽게 지팡이에서 나오는 불빛을 확인할 수 있도록 하였습니다. 아울러 이후 추가적인 기능이 제공될 수 있도록 오픈 플랫폼을 적용하여 어느 누구든 이 스마트 지팡이를 위한 기능을 개발할 수 있습니다. 

시각 장애인이 이용하기 편리하게 앱을 구성하였으며 이를 통해 스마트 지팡이와 간편하게 연동 및 사용할 수 있습니다. 또한 구글 맵, 알렉사와 같은 앱도 편리하게 이용할 수 있도록 하였습니다.  

배터리 충전은 마이크로 USB를 통해 진행되며 배터리는 완충 후 5시간까지 유지됩니다. 참조로 보통 시각 장애인용 지팡이는 평균 하루에 4시간 정도 사용된다고 하네요. 앱은 안드로이드와 iOS가 모두 적용됩니다.

WeWALK is a White Cane Accessory That Changes How Blind People Navigate

A new startup, WeWalk, which recently graduated from the Microsoft for Startups program, is making waves in the assistive technology world. WeWalk has invented a product by the same name that attaches to a regular white cane that not only detects obstacles for visually impaired people but also enhances and changes the way visually impaired navigate.

WeWalk has ultrasonic sensors that can detect obstacles around a blind person, including hanging obstacles above chest level, and notifies them through vibrations and sounds. The device also connects to a person’s phone through an app (via Bluetooth) and enables step by step navigation that it speaks out loud, thanks to its integration with Google Maps and other apps. Not only that, the app can read bus timetables out loud, notifies when a bus is approaching and also instructs the bus driver to stop! The company plans to continue to add more features, including advanced voice control through future software updates.

WeWalk has a touchpad that allows a user to interact with the app through swipe and pinch gestures. Double tapping the touch pad activates the voice control. Navigating to saved locations, finding out current location, enabling and disabling obstacle detection, and even finding one’s phone can be done via gestures on the track pad. Because all the actions are done via the touchpad, the user can simply keep the phone in their pocket, and use the free hand for other things!

WeWalk came into existence as part of a hackathon two years ago. Currently, there are around 1500 WeWalk devices being used around the world. WeWalk is also talking to several not for profits, including Swiss National Association of and for the Blind(SNAB) and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) in the UK to encourage blind users to use the device for navigation. There is a partnership with Wayfindr coming up as well to make navigation for blind people in the UK easy.

【センサーで障害物をキャッチ&警告】

視覚障害を持つ人の自立と積極的な社会への参加をうながすために開発されたという「WeWALK Smart Cane」。

超音波センサーが付いており、高さ約160cmまでの障害物を検出して、近づくと振動で警告してくれます。

実際に「WeWALK」を使ってみた人は、「より安全に街を歩くことができる」と感じたそう。

【スマホと連携&Googleマップでナビも】

さらにBluetooth経由で「WeWALK Smart Cane」のモバイルアプリと連携すれば、白杖を通してスマホの操作が可能。

グリップに搭載されたタッチパッドでコントロールする仕組みで、たとえばGoogleマップで道案内してもらったり、音声アシスタントを呼び出したりできるんです。

この機能のおかげで移動時にスマホを持って操作する必要がなく、片手が自由になる点も大きいメリットと言えそうです。

【今後は連携アプリも増えるそうです】

現時点(2019年9月13日)で「WeWALK Smart Cane」から操作できるアプリはGoogleマップと音声アシスタントですが、今後もアレクサや交通情報アプリ、シェアライドアプリなどとの連携を予定しており、どんどん進化していくのだそう。

アップデートされるごとに、視覚障害を持つ人の行動範囲をよりいっそう広げてくれるに違いありません。

【日本語対応を期待します…!】

バッテリー寿命は最大5時間なので、少々の外出なら問題なし。言語は英語とトルコ語に対応していますが、今後はもっと増えるのを期待したいところです。

失明發明家研發智能手杖 配合手機、Google 地圖方便外出

根據世界健康組織的統計數字,全球視障人士的數目高達 2.5 億,當中有約兩成在外出時會使用手杖輔助。經過訓練後,視障人士能夠透過手杖避開地面的障礙物,但卻無法得知上半身範圍的障礙物。一名土耳其的失明發明家 Kursat Ceylan,早前聯同 Young Guru Academy 設計了一款智能盲人手杖 WeWALK,嘗試徹底解決問題。

雖然智能電話能夠提供資訊,讓視障人士可以了解街道和店舖的位置,但要同時使用手杖和手機卻並不容易。WeWALK 盲人手杖能夠透過藍牙連接手機,實時提供 Google 地圖的資訊,讓視障人士了解附近的環境和商舖,同時手杖配備觸控版,可以直接操控手機,另一隻手就可以空出來。為了保護視障人士免被障礙物傷害,WeWALK 盲人手杖設有超聲波感應器,能夠偵測上半身範圍的障礙物,一旦發現就會以震動方式作出提示。

Ceylan 表示作為一名視障人士,他在地鐵站會不知道出口在哪兒,亦不知道到站的是什麼路線的巴士,或者附近有哪些店舖,WeWALK 就能給予他這些實用生活資訊。WeWALK 還可以增加其他功能,例如連接電召客車程式或使用 Amazon Alexa 智能助理等。Ceylan 表示當其他產品不斷演變,盲人手杖卻停滯不前,他相信視障人士是時候利用智能電話改善生活
