Connecting Anyone, Anywhere
Onyx delivers instant group communication anywhere. Create, manage and communicate with groups, with no geographical limits. See the position of everyone in your groups and their status. Access advanced group management features on Android or iOS.

Your Connection to the OnBeep PlatformOnyx pairs with the OnBeep app on your Android or iOS device via Bluetooth, which connects to our a state-of-the-art communications platform. Messages are delivered through our servers in realtime regardless of the carrier you're using, allowing you to keep in touch anywhere you have cellular data or access to wi-fi.

IS THERE A GUIDE TO HELP ME WITH MY ONYX?

Yes.

To get started, make sure you've downloaded and installed the OnBeep app. If you haven't installed it yet, click here to be redirected, and you can get set up. 

Your Onyx

Your Onyx device has a few different buttons to control its features. Before reading the guide below, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the names shown here.

To Power On:
Hold down the power button for a few seconds until the light ring turns on.

To Charge your Onyx:
To charge your Onyx, connect it to a power source with a micro USB cable. Any standard micro USB cable may be used with Onyx, and one is provided to you in its box.
Your Onyx ships to you partially charged. While you can start using it directly out of the box, we recommend plugging in your Onyx and charging it a bit first.

 Changing Volume:
A single button is used to control the volume on Onyx. Press the + side to increase, and the − side to decrease the volume. 

Using Headphones:
Onyx comes with a TRRS headphone jack that supports both standard stereo headphones and headphones with built-in microphones. To use headphones with Onyx, plug them into the headphone jack.

Clip Attachment
Onyx is a wearable device and attaches to clothing by its clip. The ideal attachment place is a collar or lapel, but feel free to get creative. 

The Light Ring
The light ring on Onyx communicates your status with its color and behavior.

Talking:
To send a message: 

  1. Press and hold the talk button. Wait for the light ring to turn green and audio cue to play.
  2. Speak while holding the talk button down.
  3. When you are finished, release talk button.

Using the Silence Switch: 
If you're in a situation where you don't want to send or receive messages, you can silence your Onyx by simply toggling the Silence switch to the "on" position. Your Onyx light ring will turn gold to indicate Silent mode is activated.
To toggle Silent mode off, simply toggle the Silence switch to the off position, and your Onyx light ring will change from gold back to blue (or white, depending on whether you're currently listed as in a group). 

Powering Off:
Hold down the power button for a few seconds until the light ring turns off. Please note the Onyx will not turn off while charging. 

Using your OnBeep App

Adding a new Contact
Click on the top left corner of the screen to pull up the menu. Click on "Contacts" pull up your contacts menu.

For iOS users:

  1. Click on the plus sign in the top right corner of the screen to add a new contact.
  2. Enter their email address, and then click on the checkmark to save. 

For Android users:

  1. Click on your menu button on your phone and select "Add new contact." 
  2. Enter their email address, and then click on the checkmark to save. 

If your friend is found in our database, they will be added to your contacts. If not, you're given the option to send them an invite to join OnBeep. Click the checkmark to bring up an invite. You can customize your invite. Once you're happy with it, click the checkmark again to send the invite off to your friend. 

Adding a new Group
To add a new group, follow the steps below: 

For iOS users:

  1. Click on the icon on the top left corner of your screen to pull up the menu. Select "Current Group". 
  2. Click on the plus sign on the top right corner of the screen. Select "Create a group".
  3. Type in a name for the group.
  4. Click on the plus icons next to any contacts you want to add to the group.
  5. Click on the checkmark on the top right corner of the screen to save your group and send invites to all selected contacts.

For Android users:

  1. Click on the icon on the top left corner of your screen to pull up the menu. Select "Current Group."
  2. Click on the menu button of your phone and select "Create a new group".
  3. Type in in a name for the group.
  4. Click the plus icons next to any contacts you want to add to the group
  5. Click on the checkmark on the top right corner of the screen to save your group and send invites to all selected contacts.

To Change Groups: 
To switch the group you're in, follow the instructions below: 

For iOS users:

  1. Click on the icon on the top left corner of your screen to pull up the menu. Select "Current Group". 
  2. Click on the plus sign on the top right corner of the screen. Select "Switch groups".
  3. Select the group you want to join.

For Android users: 

  1. Click on the icon on the top left corner of your screen to pull up the menu. Select "Current Group."
  2. Click on the menu button of your phone and select "Switch groups".
  3. Select the group you want to join.

To Invite Contacts to a Group:
To invite contacts to a group you're already in, follow the instructions below:

for iOS users:

  1. If you haven't already, switch to the group you want to invite others to.
  2. Click on the plus sign in the top right corner of the screen. Select "Invite Members".
  3. Click on any existing contacts that you would like to send an invite to. The plus sign to the right of the contact should change to a checkmark to confirm they are selected.
  4. Type in the email address of any contact you would like to invite to the group. 
  5. Click on the checkmark on the top right corner of the screen to send invites to all selected contacts.

for Android users:

  1. If you haven't already, switch to the group you want to invite others to.
  2. Click on the menu button on your mobile device and select "Invite Contacts".
  3. Click on any existing contacts that you would like to send an invite to. The plus sign to the right of the contact should change to a checkmark to confirm they are selected.
  4. Type in the email address of any contact you would like to invite to the group. 
  5. Click on the checkmark on the top right corner of the screen to send invites to all selected contacts.

To Set Your Avatar Picture

  1. Click on your menu icon, and select your profile by clicking on your name.
  2. At the top of the screen is a circle that is either blank or has your previous picture on it. Click on the camera icon to change your avatar.
  3. Select a picture from your phone, or take a picture for your avatar.
  4. Click the check box at the top of the screen to save your new avatar.

DO I NEED A SMARTPHONE TO USE ONYX?

Yes. You need a smartphone or other mobile device (iPod, etc.) with bluetooth and data access (Wi-Fi or cellular data). Compatible operating systems include:

  • Android running 4.1 or above.

  • iPod touch, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, running iOS 7 or above.

Our initial production run is currently being assembled, and we expect our first Onyx customers to receive devices in December, 2014.

 

CAN USERS ON DIFFERENT MOBILE DEVICES OR CELLULAR PROVIDERS TALK TO EACH OTHER?

Absolutely. One of the key features of our platform is that your devices will communicate regardless of the OS and provider you’re currently using. An Onyx paired with an iPhone on Verizon in San Francisco will have no trouble connecting to an Onyx paired with a Nexus 5 on Orange in Montreal.

 

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CHANGE MY ADDRESS BEFORE MY DEVICE IS SHIPPED?

First, make sure to set up mail forwarding with your local post office. Once you’ve done that, just notify us ahead of time of your new address, and we’ll update our system.

 

WILL ONYX WORK WITH WINDOWS OR BLACKBERRY SMARTPHONES?

We are considering building applications to support the Windows and Blackberry platforms.

 

CAN I PURCHASE AN ONYX IF I LIVE OUTSIDE OF THE US?

Onyx works worldwide, however, we're currently only able to sell it to customers with a US billing or shipping address. 

This has mostly to do with regulations and permits around the sale of devices that use radio frequencies, which differ from country to country.While we may not be able to provide Onyx where you are, don't worry! We will be expanding into other markets when possible.

ISN'T THIS JUST A WALKIE-TALKIE?

No. While walkie-talkies have a limited range, Onyx can be used anywhere you have cellular or wifi connectivity, connecting people around the world. Also, walkie-talkies are no replacement for smartphones, so people usually carry both. With Onyx you can just use your smartphone to instantly connect with people anywhere you have service.

 

CAN'T I JUST USE AN APP FOR THIS?

Not really. While you could use an app to connect with people, you have to look down, pull out your phone, open the app, select the user, and send your message. With Onyx, you can leave your phone in your pocket and just press a button to instantly connect with people without taking your focus off what you are doing.
