The Carbon Flyer is packed with technology. In addition to its super tough carbon fiber airframe, it features an ultra-low drag delta-wing design, allowing for high speeds and superior control; it uses dual high power motors with differential thrust to steer, with no fragile moving parts; it is controlled via long range Bluetooth 4.0 and a smartphone app; it features hot-swappable, rechargeable lithium ion batteries, and it has an onboard camera for taking video while it is flying. In addition, the Carbon Flyer airframe is assembled using carbon nanotube enhanced epoxy which creates bonds stronger than steel welds. It is, in fact, the world's first mainstream product to utilize this amazing material technology.

Carbon Fiber Body
Carbon Flyer's airframe (body) is created entirely of carbon fiber, a material consisting of thin, strong crystalline filaments composed of nearly pure carbon. Usually used only for exotic cars, commercial and military aircraft, or very high end sports equipment, this strong, stiff, thin fiber is 100 times stronger by weight than steel and 1,000 times stronger than the toughest foam found in most RC airplanes.
Carbon Nanotube Impregnated Epoxy
The weakest point in the Carbon Flyer's airframe is the epoxy bonds connecting the wings to the fuselage. In order to make the plane crash proof, we worked with OCSiAl, the world's leading carbon nanotech company, to develop a nanotube enhanced adhesive. Each plane will have approximately 100,000,000,000,000,000 nanotubes in it, making the epoxy bonds stronger than steel welds. This is the first product EVER to feature this amazing material.
Delta Wing Design
The stiffness, lightness, and toughness of the carbon fiber allowed us to create a very low-drag delta wing body. This allows for high speeds (640kph scale equivalent) for a plane so small, as well as providing a forgiving user experience fun for all ages and skill levels.
Impact Nose Cone
The Carbon Flyer has a rugged plastic nose cone to protect it from harm during crashes and to reduce any harm it causes by hitting people or property if the pilot isn't careful. In the making of our video, we crashed one into a concrete wall over 30 times with no harm to the plane other than scuff marks on the tip. The Nose Cone is also vital to balancing the plane so that it flies properly.
Carbon Flyer App
Control Carbon Flyer from your iPhone or Android device through a long-range Bluetooth 4.0 connection from up to 80 yards line of sight. This is almost the length of a football field, and more than enough for such a small plane. Steer by tilting your smartphone left or right, and throttle by sliding your thumb up and down. Receive real-time battery life and signal strength indication. App features SmartLink technology by TobyRich.
(NOTE: If we reach our stretch goal of $250,000, we will also be able to integrate app control of the onboard camera (which will also allow for still shots) and running lights, which requires redesigning our circuitry as well as updating the app.)
The Carbon Flyer features an onboard video camera to capture amazing aerial footage to share with your friends. The base model includes a 640x480 regular resolution camera which is manually controlled. Again, if we meet our $250,000 stretch goal, the cameras will be remotely operable. (NOTE: Due to cost, weight and power considerations, the video is NOT streaming on the Carbon Flyer. Due to its high speeds, it is not really advantageous to stream the video in any case, as it requires watching the plane to steer it properly.)
The Carbon Flyer is powered by a rechargeable, hot-swappable 1S 3.7V 150mAh 25C lithium polymer battery capable of approximately 3 minutes flight time. Since the battery is hot-swappable, with a pocketful of batteries you can fly all afternoon. A micro USB charger cable is included.
Thrust Vector Steering
The Carbon Flyer is powered by twin high output 7mm coreless motors. It is steered via thrust vectoring. That is, the power is reduced to one motor to cause it to turn in that direction. This servo-less design has no moving parts that are fragile and prone to breakage.
LED Running Lights
The Carbon Flyer has high output LED running lights located at each motor for easy tracking at dusk or night. Different colors at each wing allow the pilot to determine which way the plane is pointing even in low light conditions.
